“It has long been an axiom of mine that the little things That you do for others are infinitely the most important.”
― Arthur conan Doyle-
As I was returning home from work in evening My Daughter called me and asked to get her favourite samosas to be packed and I was waiting at counter of a sweet shop for my turn as the shop was crowded due to Diwali rush .From no where appeared a small girl in tattered cloths along two smaller boys by her side and stretched her palm revealing a shiny ten rupee coin into the counter and asked the shop keeper “I want jalebis. How many do I get for this?”. Shop keeper smiled at her, accepted the coin and gave her two steaming hot jalebis. She looked at the small leafy plate dejectedly. “Please give me my money back, we are three siblings and there are only two here.”
Shop keeper was amused by this girl’s behavior ,after few seconds returned her coin and was deeply involved with other customers .I collected my thoughts and looked at her crestfallen face which reminded me of my Daughter who used to show her crest fallen face whenever I dint approve her requests and in fact very recently she refused to speak to me because I couldn’t afford her the exotic holidays she wanted..
Mean while Girl kept the small paper plate on the counter and Clutching her coin carefully like a precious gift, began inspecting other sweets. She stared at the sweets with her big, round eyes and looked at the shopkeeper angrily when he gave a bigger packet to another customer in exchange for his note. Little girl suddenly pleaded with the shop keeper to give her the big packet of sweets in exchange for her shining ten rupee coin for that shop keeper smiled and continued his work . I tried to reason with the girl and told her “His note was bigger than yours, that is why gave him the bigger packet for that she replied “It’s not fair. Why did he give him the bigger packet and not me?” She looked at me sadly. “I promised my younger brothers that I would get them lots of jalebis. He have so many. He could have given me more. Now they will be so dejected.”
“They will not be, I promise.” shaking my head to myself. Something about the little girl told me that I would go home today, richer, not by a crisp note but by a bright smile if I could make her day
I got up from my seat asked the shop keeper to pack not one but 10 jelabis and paid at the counter and handed the same to this girl . Probably a little too big for her tiny hands, she held it carefully. “But uncle…” She tried to give the coin to me but I told her “No little girl, you keep it.”
“Thank you. Thank you so much uncle .” She smiled revealing her broken teeth and disappeared into the crowd along with her bothers .
Here is my interpretation. Life isn't a soap opera. Those big dramatic moments in our lives are few and far between. Life is made up of lots small moments in lives, a day at the beach, a really good meal in a restaurant with loved ones , enjoying a good book or bringing joy to some one with your small gesture . Yes , This is what makes our lives what they are and it is the amalgamation of all these things which will carry us in positive direction
